The Final Say: Yay or Nay
Now you’ve now finished your novel (hopefully), or at least read half, and complete several journal entries on the themes and characters. Most of
the texts you read are controversial in some regard (either due to its
incorporation of profanity, excessive violence, child prostitution, substance
abuse/addiction, televised sacrifice, etc). As a result, these texts are not often studied in
schools – for fear of being offensive/encouraging certain behaviours.
For your final journal I’d like you to
present a brief argument (in a paragraph) about whether your text should be
fully incorporated into the Grade 10 English curriculum or not. Ensure that you support your answer and explain why it should be incorporated or not.
In my opinion the novel Monster Kody Scott is secondary school appropriate, but too explicit for a grade school. In this paragraph ill explain the reasons why its appropriate in some ways but in others not. The text Monster is a violent glorified story about a South Central L.A. gang member. Even though this book has many good morals to it and lessons some of the things that are explained to the reader are quite extreme in many ways. A grade school should not have to know the meaning of murder, a Crip, or a set. Neither should anybody who is not involved, but I would say students in high school are more capable of making self decisions and what's a good idea and what's not. Therefore to teach a younger kid about violence may have them think that being a gangster is a cool, exciting career/ lifestyle. To kids in high school who may already have experienced gang encounters, or whom want an idea can understand what's a joke and what's not. Also what to stay away from. Monster Kody Scott by far has been one of the best books that I have read, and I recommend it to any reader who may be interested or has stumbled upon it.

In my opinion, the novel Lullibies For Little Criminals is very appropriate for high school students and beyond that. That being said, I think only open minded people should read this book to really understand it and not be judgemental to the main character (Baby). The fact that I got the chance to read this amazing book is just wonderful, it really hit home for me, but I liked it, because I was able to understand it to the fullest. And because of my experience with the book, I want everyone else to read it as well. The book is not offensive at all, its just a lot to take it, like her struggles with being a prostitute, having an abusive pimp and even an abusive father. This book shows you real life, and everyone needs to experience this sooner or later.

In my opinion, the novel "The Hunger Games" is a great pick for high school students. Its PG rated, has plenty of excitement and is very creative. The book shows some real life experience that people go though and how they overcome the worst situation.

The book I read was called 'Feed'. it was a story based on what the author predicted the future to be. The book basically spoke on how people have been manipulated to think as a consumer and follow trends, and it isnt to hard to see that the story wasn't far off. So big business' implanted chips into peoples minds as early as birth (for those who could afford it) and had control of their thoughts, the chip allowed to people to believe they had free will but they really didn't. The story was also a love story. Basically speaks on teen angst and puppy love. Anyways in my opinion i feel like this story should definitely be apart of the curriculum there is so much that the teacher can teach with this story. It is over all appropriate and 100% accurate on today's society.

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion , Lullabies for little criminals is a great book for students . Its filled with drama , suspense and real life issues people have to deal with . This book will open up another world , for people who don't understand what its like to deal with the problems and consequences that took place in the main character's life . I guarantee this book,because of the personal level it hits, will make people not take things/people in their life for granted .
